It's in the bag, methinks...

Looks like Lewis Hamilton has got the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award sewn up. His world title winning heroics have seen him installed as the bookmakers' favourite http://www.oddschecker.com/specials/sports-personality-of-the-year/ to triumph in the traditional end-of-year gala.

In the absence of any Olympic track and field stars (forgetful Christine Ohuruogu apart), Hamilton's only real rival is Andy Murray or gold medal-hoarder, Chris Hoy. However, Hoy operates in a real niche area and Murray hasn't managed to capture the public's imagination like his close-but-no-cigar predecessor Tiger Tim, so the road is clear for Lewis to roar to victory (apologies).

Hamilton seems a pleasant enough fellow to me, but outside of his omnipresent image in adverts, I (and I suspect most other people) know close to nothing about him. Makes the 'personality' element of the award hard to fathom. The shindig should be renamed: BBC Award for Most High Profile Success of the year...

I'd agree with most of this Loz, especially about how it's now the award for the most sporting achievement of the year. It's no longer the personality aspect that counts. I mean Greg Rusedski won it one year after reaching the final of the US Open and he's neither British, nor a particularly engaging blok, nor was his achievement particularly noteworthy!

I'd argue that Rebecca Addlington also has an excellent chance this year, she certainly seems a bit more interesting a character than Hamilton and Murray in particular.

For me it has to be between Addlington and Hoy (he's now won 5 golds I think in the last two Olympics). I think Hamilton's victory was very much handed to him and he seemed to wilt under the pressure once again.

He probably will win it though because he's the most "high profile"!
